Benefit to Support Ken Kimes Tomorrow, October 1, 6PM

Photo: Tana Butler
Pictured here is a greenhouse owned by Ken Kimes and Sandra Ward of New Natives: Organic Seeds & Sprouts, who grow organic sprouts, wheat grass, and microgreens. Ken Kimes and his wife, Sandra Ward have been organic farmers for over 25 years. Together they founded New Natives in Corralitos, California in 1983. In addition to managing their farm full time, they both have been very involved in the local sustainable agriculture movement. They are longtime members of California Certified Organic Farmers and helped establish the downtown Santa Cruz farmers’ market in 1990. Ken also serves on the board of Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) and is an adviser to the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County.

You may have read the story about Ken losing his right hand and some fingers on his left hand in a farm machine accident. You may have read about Ken's achievements and contributions to our community in the Mayor Mike's Proclamation declaring September 28, 2010 Ken Kimes Day. Now Ken and Sandra need your help.

Ken and Sandra are an inspiration to our community, and we are grateful for their continued dedication and generosity. Please show up tomorrow night (October 1st) to support them in their time of need.

A benefit concert and silent auction for the Ken Kimes Medical Fund is scheduled for Friday, October 1st at 6 pm at the Pacific Cultural Center located at the corner of Broadway and Seabright in Santa Cruz. Light food, refreshments and music by Fattah and Mohamed of Aza along with Santa Cruz favorite, Kuzanga Marimba.

Also, please mark your calendars. Gabriella Café will be hosting a benefit dinner to help with the medical expenses on Thursday, October 28, from 5:30-8:30 p.m.—read more details and register here. In addition, Phil Foster will be holding a Farm Dinner Benefit for Ken on Saturday, October 30 at Phil Foster Ranch, San Juan Bautista, from 4:00-8:00 p.m.—download the flier here.

Rebecca Thistlethwaite reported a packed house—300? That's a good number of dollars.

I could not go, but I think I at least produced some warm bodies to eat, dance, and sing.
